Join us for the first After Hours lecture of 2025, where Dr. Richard Snyder, Director of the W&M Batten School & VIMS' Eastern Shore Laboratory (ESL) celebrates the importance of shellfish in our region.

Oysters, clams, and scallops have a rich cultural, economic, and scientific history in coastal Virginia, from the native Americans to modern aquaculture. Dr. Snyder, originally from the Eastern Shore of Maryland and now Director of the ESL in Wachapreague, will pull together elements of this history into compelling stories centered on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. ESL's role in shellfish research will be highlighted, including our recent work on bay scallop restoration and aquaculture. Understanding the backstory of your seafood will perhaps add a deeper dimension of enjoyment and appreciation of these delectable critters.

Registration is required.

After Hours lectures are designed for an adult audience.

We are excited to offer this lecture in-person in McHugh Auditorium on VIMS' Gloucester Point Campus! This lecture will also be available as a live-streamed webinar. Registration is required for both in-person and webinar attendees. Webinar links will be sent in all registration confirmation emails. At this time, we are expecting a hybrid event, but registrants will be notified in advance if the event moves to a virtual only format.

This event will be photographed and/or videotaped. By attending this event, each participant consents to being photographed and/or videotaped and authorizes VIMS/William & Mary to use such photographs and videos for VIMS/W&M media purposes.
