The Stephen Schwarzman building of the New York Public Library, one of New York City's most beloved landmarks, celebrates the centennial of its opening in May 2011. It was created through the merger of two existing public libraries, the Astor Library and the Lenox Library, and the Tilden Trust. This lecture will present the incorporation of the library, its design competition, the
selection of Carr and Hastings as architects, and the critical reception of the library after its opening.
