[PAST EVENT] Oxfam Open Mic Night
March 18, 2011
8pm
Oxfam @ W&M is hosting an Open Mic Night to celebrate the 100th International Women's Day. There will be free entertainment (that everyone is encouraged to contribute to) and free Oxfam stuff. Help us raise money to support women farmers worldwide tackle hunger in their communities by participating in our sweet raffle. Musicians, singers, comedians, poets, and storytellers welcome. The mic is yours - show us what you've got. And if you want more information about performing or if you want to reserve mic time contact Poorna Dharmasri at pdharmas@gmail.com.
Oxfam is using the 100th International Women's Day to highlight issues of food security, investment in women farmers and small-scale agricultural producers, and climate change adaptation and resiliency. You may think hunger is about too many people and too little food, but our planet produces enough food to feed everyone - hunger is about power. And women who produce most of the world's food, face the greatest inequalities of all.
We can fight hunger by urging governments and companies to invest in farmers, especially those living in poor and marginalized communities. These investments must focus on women: their knowledge, their energy and their entrepreneurial drive. And we must support innovative, sustainable farming techniques that protect our food.
Free food includes Dominos, Nawab, and cookies!
Raffle prizes include: W&M Bookstore gift cards, Campus Shop T-shirts, Quiznos gift certificate, a Reveille serenade, and lunch for 8 with President Reveley!
