February 11, 2012
1pm - 2:30pm
The William and Mary Journal of Women and the Law and the Institute of Bill of Rights Law will present a public event, following the publication of the Journal's Special Issue:The Repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell. The Special Issue constitutes a selection of vastly different viewpoints and two of its contributors will be offering their perspectives.
Professor Shannon Gilreath of Wake Forest University School of Law will speak on his article entitled "Why Gays Should Not Serve in the United States Armed Forces: A Gay Liberationist Statement of Principle," providing a critique of the military's culture of masculinized violence and its support of repressive countries in the Middle East.
Michelle Benecke, co-founder of the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN) and former Army officer, will speak on "Turning Points: Challenges and Successes in Ending Don't Ask, Don't Tell," offering unique insight into SLDN, the organization that fought to protect military members who struggled under the policy and to bring about its repeal.
Free and open to the public. A reception will follow.
