[PAST EVENT] The Future of American Foreign Policy: Primacy vs. Restraint

The Alexander Hamilton Society, the John Quincy Adams Society, and the Global Research Institute are proud to present the first annual AHS/JQAS debate. This year AHS and JQAS welcome Dr. Robert Lieber and Dr. Eugene Gholz to the university to debate the following question: should America seek a more expansive, managerial global security role (primacy), or pare back its commitments and seek to avoid entanglement in most foreign wars (restraint)? There will be a Q&A session.
The debate will be moderated by Professor Peterson, and will take place on September 19th at 7:30 PM in Tidewater A. The event is free and Chick-Fil-A will be provided! See below for Speaker bios.
"Robert J. Lieber is Professor of Government and International Affairs at Georgetown University where he has previously served as Chair of the Government Department and Interim Chair of Psychology. He is author or editor of seventeen books on international relations and U.S. foreign policy and has been an advisor to presidential campaigns, to the State Department, and to the drafters of U.S. National Intelligence Estimates. In addition to his latest book, Retreat and Its Consequences: American Foreign Policy and the Problem of World Order (Cambridge University Press, 2016), his recent books include Power and Willpower in the American Future: Why the United States Is Not Destined to Decline (Cambridge, 2012). He also has taught at Harvard, Oxford, and the University of California, Davis, and has been Visiting Fellow at the Fondation nationale des sciences politiques in Paris, the Brookings Institution in Washington, and Fudan University in Shanghai. He received his undergraduate education at the University of Wisconsin and earned his Ph.D. at Harvard. In addition, he has been a recipient of fellowships from the Guggenheim, Rockefeller and Ford Foundations, Georgetown University’s Career Research Achievement Award, and the Hepburn-Shibusawa Distinguished Senior Lectureship at the University of Tokyo."
"Eugene Gholz is an associate professor of political science at the University of Notre Dame. He works primarily at the intersection of national security and economic policy, on subjects including innovation, defense management, and U.S. grand strategy. He co-wrote a well-known International Security article that coined the term “restraint” as a proposed grand strategy for the United States. From 2010-2012, he served in the Pentagon as Senior Advisor to the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Manufacturing and Industrial Base Policy. He is the coauthor of two books: Buying Military Transformation: Technological Innovation and the Defense Industry, and U.S. Defense Politics: The Origins of Security Policy. He is chair of the international security section of the International Studies Association (2019-2021) and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations; he previously held faculty positions at the University of Texas at Austin, Williams College, the University of Kentucky, and George Mason University; and his Ph.D. is from MIT."
