[PAST EVENT] Distinguished Speaker: Per Christensen, RenderMan Group, Pixar

In this talk, I will first give a brief overview of the movie-making process at Pixar. Then I will focus on the last step, the computation of the final movie images (movie-quality rendering). In particular, I will discuss how ray tracing and global illumination methods are used to increase image realism. The biggest challenge is to develop multiresolution algorithms that work efficiently on scenes with extremely complex geometry.
Bio:
Per Christensen is a senior software developer in Pixar's RenderMan group. His main research interests are efficient ray tracing and global illumination in very complex scenes. He received an M.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from the Technical University of Denmark and a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Washington. Prior to joining Pixar, he worked at ILM, Mental Images, and Square USA. He has received an Academy Award (c) for his contributions to point-based global illumination and ambient occlusion.
