[PAST EVENT] Dr. Peter Adamson (Professor of Ancient and Medieval Philosophy): Guest Lecture
October 14, 2021
4:30pm - 7pm
The Self in Islamic, Indian, and African Philosophy (Invited Lecture)
Abstract: In this lecture we will consider one of the most fundamental philosophical questions: “What am I?” Historically, many traditions have answered this question by suggesting that each person is especially to be identified with the subject of mental activity: effectively, I am my mind, as opposed to my body. We will explore several ideas about the self that fall under this broad family of "mind-based" theories of personhood, looking at the notion of atman in the Upanisads, the plural account of the self in Akan thought, and the theory of self-awareness put forward by the Muslim philosopher Ibn Sina (Avicenna).
