Topology and basketball

Topological data analysis is a new and growing field that uses ideas from algebraic topology to find patterns in large data sets. I’ll talk a little about how it works, and apply it to understanding how professional basketball teams use different lineups of players, and how that usage has changed over the years. The same approach can work in many different settings, including voting theory, the energy grid, and Shakespeare’s plays.
