The Schroeder Center for Health Policy is pleased to host a talk on "Addressing Health Disparities with Community Health Workers: The Role of Public Policy" by W&M Professor of Kinesiology, Iyabo Obasanjo. Professor Obasanjo is currently examining the use of community health workers (CHWs) in Richmond, Virginia. Community health workers are frontline public health workers who, according to the American Public Health Association, "serve as a liaison/link/intermediary between health/social services and the community to facilitate access to services and improve the quality and cultural competence of service delivery." Professor Obasanjo's talk will focus on the role of community health workers in improving patient health by addressing health disparities and how Virginia's Medicaid policy might be changed to increase their role.
Professor Obasanjo received her PhD in Epidemiology ('95) from Cornell University. She was a Post-Doctoral Fellow at Wake Forest University and also worked as a statistician and project manager in clinical research for pharmaceutical drug development for FDA approval. She was appointed Commissioner for Health in Ogun State of Nigeria in 2003 and elected to the Nigerian Senate in 2007, where she chaired the Health Committee. In 2011, she was an Advanced Leadership Fellow at Harvard University and explored the issues of governance, leadership, and public health. She has given presentations around the world.
Professor Obasanjo’s talk is part of the Schroeder Center’s continuing efforts to educate students about a broad array of public policies related to healthcare and population health.
Lunch will be provided to registrants. Please register at the link below.
