Access & Features
- Open to the public
Dr. Wang Dan, a former history student from Peking University in the late 1980s, will speak about his role in the 1989 pro-democracy demonstrations that resulted in the Tiananmen Square massacre on June 4, 1989. No. 1 on the Chinese government's list of most wanted fugitives after the crackdown, he was imprisoned by the Chinese authorities for 7 years before eventually being granted a medical parole and exiled to the US. In exile, he studied at Harvard University and received an MA and PhD in history, then went on to teach at Oxford University in the UK and in a number of universities in Taiwan before returning to the US and launching a think tank in Washington, D.C. called "Dialogue China." Nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize three times, he continues to be a passionate advocate of political reform in China.
