The recent Israeli war in Gaza provoked a plethora of heated reactions which made it very clear that, in both the U.S. & Western Europe, it is impossible to speak of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict without resorting to comparisons with past historical events. However, this difficulty is not new since important European artists such as Jean-Luc Godard and Jean Genet encountered it in their attempt to represent the Palestinians in their production of the 1970s and 1980s, the focus of this lecture.
