[PAST EVENT] Will Smith '14 on the Monrovia Football Academy
Will is the President and Director of Monrovia Football Academy, Inc. (MFA). He was a Division 1 Scholar All-American soccer player at William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, and he graduated in 2014 as a member of Phi Beta Kappa with degrees in Government and French. Prior to his final year at William & Mary, Will spent three months in Monrovia, Liberia working for the U.S. State Department and conducting honors thesis research in the capital city's fishing communities. In addition to working in Liberia, Will managed to play in a number of meaningful football matches, including the Liberian Peace and Reconciliation match and a contest against the Liberian national team.
After graduating, Will traveled across the Atlantic Ocean to complete the MSc in African Studies at the University of Oxford. His master's dissertation research brought him to Kigali, Rwanda, where he examined the effect of football on Rwanda's peace and reconciliation process. He finished his degree in July 2015, and immediately embarked on a three-month consultancy in Cote d'Ivoire. In October, he moved to Monrovia to open MFA.
