A Conversation About Solo Status and Stereotype Threat at W&M
"Stereotype threat refers to being at risk of confirming, as self-characteristic, a negative stereotype about one's group." (Steele & Aronson, 1995)
When individuals enter settings in which members of their race or gender are not well represented, they can find themselves to be one of very few or the sole representative of their social group. Such individuals are said to experience solo status. Sekaquaptewa, D., and Thompson, M. (2002).
Join Warrenetta Mann and Patrick Hudgins from the W&M Counseling Center, and WMSURE co-directors Anne H. Charity Hudley and Cheryl Dickter for a conversation on solo status and stereotype threat on the William and Mary campus.
