Movie Poster for Tokyo Pop (1988)

Join us on December 8th at 7:00pm in Tucker Hall, Room 127, for a free screening of Tokyo Pop.

Tokyo Pop released in 1988, playing a brief run of theaters around the US and the Cannes Film Festival. After this, the film slipped into obscurity. It never received a dvd release and was never put on a streaming service. Thanks to funding from Dolly Parton, Carol Burnett, the HFPA Trust, and donors to IndieCollect’s Jane Fonda Fund for Women Directors, Tokyo Pop has received a new 4K restoration and been rereleased for showings in Paris, the UK, Los Angeles, New York, and select US cities.

This screening on 12/8 is the first screening of Tokyo Pop in the state of Virginia.
The event is free and open to the public.

Film Synopsis:
Disillusioned with her life in New York, bleach-blonde rocker Wendy hops on a plane to Tokyo with dreams of making it as a singer. While hostessing at a karaoke bar, she meets Hiro, whose fledgling band is hungry for their big break. When Hiro enlists Wendy to be the band’s lead singer, the two form a romantic and musical connection that leads to unexpected if unsustainable fame. From Fran Rubel Kuzui (director of the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer), this newly restored gem of 80s independent cinema takes audiences on a bright, breezy, tongue-in-cheek tour through Japan’s economic bubble era and its American pop cultural influences.
