[PAST EVENT] Russian Orthodoxy Reloaded: Russian and Post-Soviet Studies Alumnus Homecoming Lecture
Access & Features
- Open to the public
Jacob Lassin '13, sixth-year Ph.D. candidate in Slavic Languages and Literatures at Yale University, will deliver the Russian and Post-Soviet Studies Alumnus Homecoming Lecture. Since the end of the Soviet Union, the Russian Orthodox Church has become an important symbol of Russian national unity and an important ally of the Russian state. However, Church attendance and participation in traditional religious life remains rather low. In order to combat this trend and expand its influence in Russian society, the Church has turned to the Internet as a way of reaching people outside of the regular bounds of Church life. What issues are most important to the Church online? What kind of Orthodox community is the Church trying to project with its online discourse? What are the political and theological stakes of Church's push online? This talk will explore these questions and offer some direction on what we can learn from the Russian Orthodox Church on the Internet. Learn more about Jacob Lassin
