The William & Mary Confucius Institute is honored to have the renowned scholar Professor Andrew Walder, the Denise O'Leary and Kent Thiry Professor in the School of Humanities and Sciences at Stanford University. As a political sociologist, Walder has long specialized on the sources of conflict, stability, and change in communist regimes and their successor states.

China?s remarkable rise has been driven by an economic model that is a distinctive blend of a familiar state-directed East Asian development model and a post-socialist transitional economy. However, this distinctive model has reached the end of its high-growth takeoff, and must now shift to a new one driven by efficiency gains and innovation instead of high investment and urbanization. This talk will review the forces behind China?s rise and evaluate the factors that may constrain the country?s future prospects. The lecture will be followed by a reception. Free and open to the public!
