Guest Lecture, Dr. Lori Allen, 2023 Vinson Sutlive Book Prize Winner.
A History of False Hope is a beautifully written anthropological exploration of the history of investigative commissions in Palestine. Lori Allen’s ethnographic analysis expands our understandings of abstract legal liberalism through its practice and experience by non-Europeans across the 20th century. Allen skillfully demonstrates how the false hope engendered through the international liberal legal order has both delayed a Palestinian self-determined future and opened up political possibilities as Palestinians create other grammars of justice. A History of False Hope is both a timely historical account, as well as a significant contribution to ongoing discussions in legal anthropology about the varied legacies - and persistence - of colonial occupation.
