The Reves Center hosts an on-the-ground report on the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine from Doug Mercado '85, currently serving with the World Food Programme (WFP) as the Head of Area Office for Romania, supporting WFP’s emergency operations in Ukraine. The event is open only to the William & Mary community. Registration is required.
Doug Mercado has worked in the field of international humanitarian assistance and post-disaster recovery over the past 32 years on assignments with the United Nations, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the Organization of American States and various non-governmental organizations (NGO). He has managed humanitarian relief operations, refugee assistance programs and disaster recovery efforts in more than two dozen countries including Nicaragua, Afghanistan, Iraq, Angola, Mozambique, Sudan, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Albania, Eritrea, Sri Lanka and Nigeria.
Mr. Mercado has recently completed assignments in Barbados (USAID), Ethiopia (USAID), the Bahamas (WFP) and Colombia (WFP). He led the US government’s humanitarian response to the Ebola epidemic in West Africa in 2015 and served as the Humanitarian Advisor at the US Mission to the United Nations in New York from 2008-2013 where he directed US government humanitarian policy engagement at the United Nations.
He currently holds the position of visiting lecturer at Princeton University’s School of Public and International Affairs (SPIA). Mr. Mercado was awarded a Master of Public Policy from Princeton University, a Master of Arts in Latin American Studies from the University of Texas at Austin and a Bachelor of Arts in Latin American Studies and History from William & Mary.
