Join the Global Research Institute and AidData as we welcome Professor Marina Rudyak on Thursday, March 30 at 5:30 PM in James Blair 201 for her talk "Unpacking Global China: Beijing's View on Development, Modernization, and the World," in conversation with Ammar A. Malik, Senior Research Scientist at AidData.
China describes its international status as the world's largest developing country and a major power. In the international system, it seeks to position itself as an alternative great power. One that is focused on development and, as stated by its leader Xi Jinping just prior to the National People’s Congress, has proven that modernization does not need to equal “westernization”—thus showing other developing countries alternative pathways to modernization. In the West, this rhetoric is often dismissed as propaganda, but there are world views behind words—and effective China policy needs strategic empathy. Marina Rudyak will unpack how China understands development and modernization, how its view has been shaped by Chinese history, and what this means for China’s engagement with the Global South and the multilateral system, most recently through the China Global Development and Global Security Initiative.
