Learn & Serve programs expose students to formal and experiential learning of colloquial Arabic, local history and culture, and the dynamics of service in the Middle East and North Africa.

Learn & Serve in Cairo, Egypt:

This program is an unparalleled opportunity for students to participate in an intense service learning experience with local non-governmental organizations in the bustling city of Cairo. Students simultaneously study Egyptian Colloquial Arabic, allowing them to practice speaking the most widely understood Arabic dialect, while undertaking an international volunteer placement in Cairo, the Arab world's most populous city.

Students can choose to participate in either a 6-week or 8-week Learn & Serve program in Egypt. The two programs are identical in structure, with the 8-week program providing a two week extension of the volunteer placement. The 8-week program may be suitable for students who prefer to stay in Egypt longer or whose home institution may require a longer volunteer placement period of in order to fulfill a service learning requirement. Students on both programs will earn a total of 6 credits.

With the addition of cultural activities, dialogue programs with local university students, and excursions, students gain an intimate understanding of the role of organizations in Egyptian society.

Learn & Serve in Sohar, Oman:

During this distinctive 6-week service learning opportunity, students discover Oman's unique history and culture with a 3-credit Omani Society and Culture course. At the same time, students receive 3-credit Omani Colloquial Arabic instruction to better interact with Omanis during the service portion of their program.

AMIDEAST students live and learn with Omani university students at Sohar University. AMIDEAST students serve as English Language assistants with Sohar University's General Foundation Program (GFP). In the GFP Omani students work on the four skills in English (reading, writing, listening and speaking) and on study skills, all in preparation for their integration into formal university study in English medium courses. AMIDEAST Learn & Serve Oman students will work under the supervision of GFP faculty to assist students with the speaking and listening components of the program and help to run extracurricular activities in a variety of areas, all conducted in English.

Students participate in several program-organized excursions throughout Oman, such as Muscat, Jabal Akhdar, and Ras Al Jinz or Salalah.
