[PAST EVENT] Application Deadline for Summer Internships with the Embassy of Spain and Library of Congress

The Cultural Affairs Office of the Embassy of Spain in Washington, DC will accept up to two William & Mary current sophomores, juniors or seniors as interns during the Summer of 2012. An additional two internships are anti?ci?pated for the Hispanic Reading Room and/or European Reading Room of the Library of Congress. Internships normally last a minimum of eight weeks with precise schedule determined by supervising staff.

Applicants for both venues must demonstrate superior command of Spanish (or for the European Reading Room, another modern language); know?ledge of a broad range of cultural and artistic expressions including liter?ature, film, theater, music and art; a professional demeanor; an ability to work well with others; and commit?ment to the full range of cultural diversity represented by Spanish cul?ture. Please indicate in your cover letter which placement you would prefer and if you would be willing to accept assignment at either of these prestige institutions.

While both are unpaid intern?ships, William & Mary participants can count on the assistance of our Washington Office to locate housing and to build com?mun?ity with fellow interns from the College serving throughout the District.

Interns at the Embassy will work under the direct supervision of the Consejero Cul?tural and in col?laboration with his staff; summer duties usually end prior to August when most Embassy staff have their vacations. The work of the Em?bassy of Spain is conducted primarily in Spanish. Nominees for internships at the Library of Congress must still apply through the Hispanic Reading Room/ European Reading Room application process but will have the prior endorse?ment of the faculty of William & Mary.

Duties will include preparation of documents, the creation of databases, archi?val and on‑line research, scheduling cultural programming with Spanish and American mus?eums, film distri?butors, handling phone calls in Spanish and English, and gener?al office assistance. Interns will also help program and organize cultural events such as concerts, lectures and exhibitions, and attend staff meetings. Dress is typi?cally business casual in both settings. Last sum?mer Madeleine DeSimone (?12) and Jake Brody (?12) represented the College at the Embassy of Spain, and Eleonora (Ellie) Figliouli (?12) at the Library of Congress. They are available for consultation on their internship experiences.

Applications from current Wm & Mary students for placement at the Embas?sy of Spain should include a one page personal statement, written in Spanish, detailing their qualifications and interests, a current academic transcript (Banner printout is sufficient), and a current r?sum?. Students who are not Hispanic Studies majors should also supply two letters of recommend?a?tion in sealed envelopes with their applica?tion or have them sent directly to Prof. Greenia; at least one letter must ad?dress language proficiency. Selection will be made by Hispanic Studies faculty in consultation with the Consejero Cultural of the Embassy of Spain.
