Come and listen to the enchanting sounds of pipa, a traditional Chinese music instrument, played by WMCI Volunteer Teacher Mengxia Zhang. With over 2000 years of history in China, the lute-like pipa is shaped like half of a pear and takes its name from ?pi? and ?pa?, meaning ?plucking forward? and ?plucking backward?, respectively. Mengxia Zhang is currently a graduate student at Beijing Normal University majoring in Musicology, specializing in playing and teaching traditional Chinese musical instruments-- specifically the pipa and ruan. She has won many national awards in China and participated in numerous international exchanges, including the 2011 Confucius Institute Performance Tour.
