Join us for a special Valentine’s Day-themed After Hours lecture with Dr. Jeff Shields, Professor at William & Mary’s Batten School & VIMS, who will enlighten us on the variety of weird, whacky, and wonderful ways that marine animals reproduce.
The passing on of genes is an all-consuming task in the animal world, and marine animals have fascinating ways to ensure their genetic legacy. How do stationary organisms like the barnacle mate? How do crabs find each other in the vast and dark deep sea? Are oysters really an aphrodisiac? Find out the answers to these questions and more during this engaging and humorous talk. Preserved specimens from the Batten School & VIMS’ Fish Collection and Invertebrate Collection will also be on display in the Visitors Center for guests to interact with before and after the lecture. This talk is rated PG-13: parents strongly cautioned!
Registration is required.
After Hours lectures are designed for an adult audience.
We are excited to offer this lecture in-person in McHugh Auditorium on VIMS' Gloucester Point Campus! This lecture will also be available as a live-streamed webinar. Registration is required for both in-person and webinar attendees. Webinar links will be sent in all registration confirmation emails. At this time, we are expecting a hybrid event, but registrants will be notified in advance if the event moves to a virtual only format.
This event will be photographed and/or videotaped. By attending this event, each participant consents to being photographed and/or videotaped and authorizes VIMS/William & Mary to use such photographs and videos for VIMS/W&M media purposes.
