Using carbonate chemistry to improve management of an important fishery - The waved whelk, Buccinum undatum, is an important commercial species in Northern Europe. Increasing demand has seen the fishery expand dramatically over the last 20 years. This increase has also brought suspected population declines in many areas, something which fisheries scientists are keen to monitor. We have developed an ageing tool for these animals using a small structure called the statolith, contained in each whelk. This has enabled fisheries scientists to accurately determine size-at-age and age-at-maturity for the first time, improving the management and monitoring prospects for this important fishery. Presented by Dr. Phil Hollyman, Research Officer, School of Ocean Sciences, Bangor University, Wales, UK.

There is no charge for this presentation. Seating limited to 60 people.
