Is the Brancacci Chapel in Florence unique in the history of Italian art? St. Peter's life and works unfold in scene after scene across the chapel walls, yet there is clearly much more to these famous frescoes. The paintings can be read in biographical sequence, but bracketed between the story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, they demand to be read within the larger theme of Creation. Masaccio scholarship has uncovered still other meanings to be considered. In this groundbreaking lecture, Dr. John T. Spike proposes to apply the literary theory of Dante, 'the fourfold levels of interpretation' to unlock the chapel's secrets. Tune in for the 'Brancacci Code'.
