Dr. Melissa Checker, Hagedorn Professor of Urban Studies at Queens College and Associate Professor of Anthropology at the CUNY Graduate Center, will give a Zoom talk on her research exploring the hidden consequences of sustainable policies in New York. Documented in her new book The Sustainability Myth: Environmental Gentrification and the Politics of Justice, this talk will examine the socioeconomic impact of environmental gentrification and urban redevelopment on non-gentrifying neighborhoods in New York and will highlight the work of environmental justice advocates to unveil the socioeconomic consequences and racial underpinning of “sustainability”.
