L. Nelson with clearnose skate

The fossil record of skates and rays date back to more than 150 million years ago. Closely related to sharks, these flattened fish are abundant species all along the East Coast. Research at VIMS has helped us gain a better understanding of migration patterns, fishery management, and overall species longevity. Lindsey Nelson, a VIMS graduate student, will discuss how her research on Clearnose skates has helped scientists better understand the population structure of these fascinating fishes.

Discovery labs are free, family-friendly programs that include activities and a short presentation. Registration is required to attend the live event.
