Dr. Claire McKinney’s research on reproductive politics centers the relationship between medicine, politics, and gendered citizenship. The dominant framing of abortion politics after Dobbs v. Jackson relies on tragic narratives of denial of reproductive care. These narratives mobilize broad indignation at the injustice of abortion criminalization, but they also distort the material reality of abortion inaccessibility before Dobbs and how abortion bans produce gender subordination. Couching abortion politics in terms of freedom and inclusion provides an alternative account of the harm of Dobbs.
