[PAST EVENT] The Case of Julie LaVerne: How Performers Remade Race in "Show Boat"
April 9, 2014
4pm - 5:15pm
Professor Todd Decker, an authority on the American musical stage, will focus his comments on the role of Julie, a mixed-race character called upon to give voice to her racial identity in the song "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man." Professor Decker's presentation considers the origins of the character "Julie in Edna Ferber's novel, then explores who Hammerstein and Kern shaped the Broadway stage role for nightclub singer Helen Morgan. Professor Decker uses this presentation to trace the twisted path of the color line through the history of the American musical on stage and screen.
"Show Boat," based on Edna Ferber's 1926 novel of the same name, opened December 27, 1926 at the Ziegfeld Theatre in New York. It was an immediate hit that ushered in a new age of Broadway entertainment. Even today it remains the most revived work of the Broadway musical stage.
This lecture is held as part of the Department of Music's Music in American Culture Series (MACS).
