The Department of Art & Art History celebrates the publication of a new book by Dr. Catherine Levesque, Professor of Art History and an expert in Dutch art of the early modern period. Published by the prestigious Amsterdam University Press, her book, titled Jacob van Ruisdael's Ecological Landscapes, offers a striking new interpretation of the work by the greatest Netherlandish landscape painter of the seventeenth century. As the publisher explains, "This book examines Jacob van Ruisdael's treatment of five subjects—dunes, grainfields, ruins, rushing water, and woodlands—that recur throughout his career. The paintings, though fictive, show close attention to the complexities of particular environments that can be fruitfully considered 'ecological.' ... His ability to depict nature’s dynamism provided an alternative vision at a foundational moment when landscape, increasingly manipulated and controlled, was most often considered property and investment." Reception open to the public in the Andrews Gallery, Thursday, October 24, 5:00-6:00pm.
