Kent Mackenzie's 1961 film The Exiles documents nearly 24 hours in the lives of eight Native Americans who live in the Bunker Hill district of Los Angeles. Thompson will discuss the ways in which the film also quietly chronicles a racialized and queer LA: a city's moment not only before Stonewall and gay liberation and the American Indian Movement. In this sense, The Exiles manages a kind of queer intimacy unfettered, unsettled, and untimely desires on the brink of progress.
