Algae are simple, microscopic plants that live in both ocean and freshwater habitats. When algae grow out of control, they produce what are known as algal blooms. If conditions are right, these can turn toxic and become harmful algal blooms, or HABs. Toxins generated by these blooms can kill fish, mammals, and birds, and may cause serious or even fatal illnesses in people. VIMS graduate student Sarah Pease will discuss the HABs that occur in Chesapeake Bay during summer, and how these blooms impact humans and the environment.
