This talk will discuss eighteen years of archaeological and cultural heritage research in the Society Islands. The 'Opunbohu Valley is a large and highly productive valley on the north shore of Mo'orea in the Windward Society Islands. The speaker will discuss three types of archaeological research that was carried out in the valley: settlement pattern analysis of archaeological sites; household archaeology and excavation of pre-contact house sites; and studies of agricultural production and intensification. The speaker will highlight a recent collaborative project, the construction of an archaeological nature trail, where she worked with the local community and the French Polynesian government to document cultural heritage sites, with a goal towards long-term management and preservation.
