Senator Monty Mason

Senator T. Montgomery “Monty” Mason, a 1989 W&M graduate, is a member of the Virginia General Assembly and represents the Peninsula’s 1st Senate District (City of Williamsburg and parts of Newport News, James City County, Hampton, York County, and Suffolk). He is a member of the General Assembly’s Joint Subcommittee to Study Mental Health Services in the Twenty-First Century, whose mission is “to study the delivery of mental health services, including laws governing the provision of mental health services and the system of emergency, short-term, forensic, and long-term mental health services in the Commonwealth.” He is also a member of the Behavioral Health Commission, which was established “for the purpose of studying and making recommendations for the improvement of behavioral health services and the behavioral health service system in the Commonwealth to encourage the adoption of policies to increase the quality and availability of and ensure access to the full continuum of high-quality, effective, and efficient behavioral health services for all persons in the Commonwealth.” In addition to serving on other studies and commissions, Senator Mason has legislative appointments on the following committees: Rehabilitation and Social Services; Commerce and Labor; Privileges and Elections; Agriculture, Conservation, and Natural Resources; and General Laws and Technology.

Senator Mason will speak to the William & Mary community about his work in the Virginia General Assembly and the work of the committees on which he serves, with a focus on mental health policy in Virginia. Senator Mason’s talk is the first of four talks on “State Policy on Mental Health and Substance Abuse” sponsored by the Schroeder Center for Health Policy during the Fall 2021 semester. The remaining three talks, which are open to the William & Mary community, are:
