[PAST EVENT] Afghanistan under Taliban Rule: Accessing Education During Conflict

In August 2021 the Taliban seized control of Afghanistan. Since then, they have imposed draconian directives limiting girls access to education and closing institutes of higher learning. This panel will focus on the difficulties of accessing education in Afghanistan today and the implications for millions of Afghan students and scholars. Joining our panel to discuss these issues will be refugee scholars and the former president of the American University of Afghanistan.
The panel will feature:
- David Sedney: recent Acting President, American University of Afghanistan (AUAF); Dep Asst Sec of Defense, Afghanistan, Pakistan & Central Asia; Deputy Chief of Mission, US Embassy in Kabul; Director, Afghanistan, National Security Council)
- Sahar Hareer: Afghan undergraduate student at the American University of Afghanistan; refugee recently arrived in Qatar
- Torpekai Ahmadi: Afghan undergraduate student at the American University of Afghanistan; refugee recently arrived in Qatar
- Haroun Rahimi: Chair of Law Program, American University of Afghanistan; currently based in Seattle, Washington
- Roheena Farahmand: Scholar of finance & gender studies; currently a researcher at Nord University School of Business in Norway
- Mohammad Ali Amiri: Scholar of psychology; currently a visiting researcher at Stockholm University in Sweden
