[PAST EVENT] George Ciccariello-Maher presents "The Cunning of Decolonization"
Prof. George Ciccariello-Maher is an eminent scholar of Latin America and author of the ground-breaking Decolonizing Dialectics (Duke UP), Building the Commune: Radical Democracy in Venezuela (Verso) and We Create Chavez: A People?s History of the Venezuelan Revolution (Duke UP).
Prof. George Ciccariello-Maher will present his lecture, "The Cunning of Decolonization". While nothing would seem more natural than to resist oppression, decolonization often comes as a surprise. Why? Drawing on the black radical tradition and contemporary Latin American politics, Prof. Ciccariello-Maher theorizes both sides of this element of surprise: a colonial blindspot on the side of the colonizer, and a form of radical second sight specific to the colonized and racialized that often takes the form of explosive appearance.
