Prof. Deven Carlson, Associate Director for Education at the National Institute for Risk and Resilience and Presidential Research Professor at the University of Oklahoma, will present a lecture on School Choice and Diversity in the U.S.: How Race, Politics, and Values Influence Policy and Shape School Communities. School choice operates in many forms. Recent proposals in Virginia to expand charter schools and other versions of school choice have been promoted by Governor Glenn Younkin as well as other choice advocates. Critics of these proposals worry that if adopted they will weaken public education in the state. What are the central considerations in these debates? What implications do these proposals have for educating increasingly diverse student populations in Virginia and in other states? Please join Prof. Deven Carlson, one of the nations leading experts on school choice and its implications for racial segregation and school performance, the W&M Public Policy Program, and School of Education for an evening of learning and discussion of these important and timely topics.
