It has often been said that "The only constant is change"(cf. Heraclitus 6th C BC). In the developing / transitioning world, this constant is especially true for communities and regions that possess assets -- e.g. human and natural resources -- which can be developed for economic gain and/or societal value. In the development process questions arise regarding best practices and sustainable outcomes to ensure enhancements to quality of life (QOL). That is, how might development best be managed to optimize outcomes for the local community, larger society, and relevant stakeholders?

Innovation, and Social Entrepreneurship often orbit around this sustainability discussion. The broader business and social disciplines are often put to the side. This presentation looks at the issue of innovation and sustainability from a Macromarketing perspective of society, systems, and interactions. Examples from my and colleagues work in five developing economies are presented and some conclusions are drawn regarding the need for a truly integrated approach to global innovation and social entrepreneurship based on a marcromarketing systems focused approach.
