[PAST EVENT] Mathematics Colloquium: Amanda Schaeffer Fry, Michigan State University
February 21, 2014

Abstract: Representation theory allows us to view an abstract group, in some sense, as a group of matrices which may be easier to understand. The representation theory of finite groups has become a rich and interesting field in itself, but is also a useful tool in studying the structure of a group. We may wonder what information we can get back about our group just by studying its representations. I will begin by introducing some basics of representation theory, and then discuss some interesting problems which relate the representation theory of a finite group to its group-theoretic properties.
