Laura Wherry (BA, W&M Economics, '03; Ph.D. in Public Policy, University of Chicago's Harris School) is an Assistant Professor of Economics and Public Service at New York University's Wagner Graduate School of Public Service. She has written extensively on women's health-related issues. Her "primary area of research focuses on the changing role of the Medicaid program and its impact on access to health care and health. Recent work examines the early effects of the Affordable Care Act Medicaid expansions, as well as the longer-term effects of several large expansions in Medicaid targeting low-income pregnant women and children in the 1980s and 1990s." She has co-authored recent articles on:
- “Estimated Mortality Increases During the COVID-19 Pandemic by Socioeconomic Status, Race, and Ethnicity” in Health Affairs (2021).
- "Medicaid Expansion Increased Preconception Health Counseling, Folic Acid Intake, and Postpartum Contraception" in Health Affairs (2020).
- “The Economic Consequences of Being Denied an Abortion” in American Economic Journal: Economic Policy (forthcoming).
Dr. Wherry will speak to the William & Mary community about her research on women's health and public policy. To register for Dr. Wherry's talk, please click here.
