"Redefining the Legacy: An Afternoon with Tim Reid" will feature a screening of short films followed by an in-depth discussion with Reid about the film industry and African-American culture in America. Reid's work aims to find ways for African-Americans to take control of their own stories and legacies—through film and other media -- or be at risk to lose their true culture forever.
Reid, an Emmy-nominated actor, director and producer, has appeared on television for over three decades, from Venus Flytrap, on WKRP in Cincinnati through Simon & Simon, Frank’s Place, Sister, Sister, That 70’s Show, HBO’s Treme, and recently OWN’s Greenleaf and Love Is.
Through his non-profit Legacy Media Institute,, Reid instructs an international group of students and emerging filmmakers, promoting excellence and accountability in creating media that reflects a diverse global society. Reid has received numerous Honorary Degrees and has been inducted into the National Black College Hall of Fame. He was appointed by two Governors to serve two terms on the Board of Visitors of Norfolk State University, and he currently serves on the Richmond Forum Board. Through his Tim Reid Productions, he has launched a new Media Center and Creative Incubator in the Manchester area of Richmond, VA.
In 1995, he made his directorial debut with his critically acclaimed feature film, “Once Upon a Time…When We Were Colored.” Tim’s other film projects include New Millennium ‘s feature production, “Asunder,” starring Blair Underwood, Debbi Morgan and Michael Beach, and “For Real”, which Reid directed, produced and distributed through New Millennium Releasing. He also created and produced the critically acclaimed Showtime TV series “Linc’s”, and has received the “Oscar Micheaux Award” from the Producer’s Guild of America for outstanding lifetime achievement. In 2012, Reid co-produced and directed “Keepers of the Flame”, a compelling film about Virginia’s central role in American history, for visitors to the Virginia State Capitol. He recently launched new TV series, Legacy of a People, described as a “Talkumentary,” debuted November 2018.
