Researching the (Hostile) Other, or the Ethics of Continued Dialogism in Times of War and Academic Crisis
Mikhail Bakhtin is famous for his insistence on the value of dialogism in both literary practices and interpersonal communication. But how does one remain open to a meaningful interaction with an ideologically different other in times of profound historical and disciplinary crisis? Is participating in such dialogues ethically viable? In this talk, I use my research on the Russo-American cultural exchange  from the second half of the 19th c., and my translations of Bakhtin’s 1970s interviews with Victor Duvakin and Mikhail Bulgakov’s dramatic adaptation of Don Quixote, to address such questions as I grapple with the idea of what it means to be a Slavic Studies scholar today.
