Profesor Preston's lecture is called "Out of the Parlor and onto the Public Stage: The Triumphant 19th-Century Career of 'The People's Prima Donna,' Emma Abbott."

Katherine K. Preston is the David N. and Margaret C. Bottoms Professor of Music at the College of William and Mary, where she has taught since 1989. She is a music historian and has published extensively on various aspects of musical life and culture in 19th-century America. Her two most recent books were both released in May 2011: a scholarly edition of Symphony No. 2 ("The Jullien Symphony") (1853) by the American composer George Bristow and a facsimile edition of a bound volume of sheet music, "Emily's Songbook: Popular Music in 1850s Albany." She is hard at work on her sixth book, tentatively titled "Against the Grain: Prima Donna/Impresarios of English Language Opera Companies in the United States, 1860-1900," which she hopes to finish in 2012. She is also currently President of the Society for American Music.
