Please join us for Professor Robin Veder's talk, "Modern Art, Modern Dance, and the Making of an International Rhythmic Race"
In the 1920s and 1930s, artist Katherine Dreier and dancer Ted Shawn believed they could make a new race by rhythmically stimulating viewers neuromuscular systems. Veder locates their joint contribution to American modernism within the cultural contexts of new systems of body awareness and body culture, physiological psychology, and the new thought of theosophy. Veder proposes a whole new explanation of the origins of American modern art.
