[PAST EVENT] Rwanda20: A Memorial and Conversation on Modern Genocide
April 18, 2014
10am - 5pm
On April 18th, STAND, Africana Studies, and iPAX will commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Rwandan genocide with an all day memorial on the Crim Dell Meadow and a series of speakers and performances at 5PM in Commonwealth Auditorium. The memorial will allow students to learn about the Rwandan genocide, as well as other genocides currently happening. Students will be able to reflect, and even add their personal messages to the memorial.
At 5PM, Professor Vinson of the History Department will present a brief history of the genocide, as well as explain the implications for other conflicts in the region. IPAX will perform a reading from the award-winning books, Machete Season and Life Laid Bare. STAND will conclude the evening with a dialogue about what students can do to prevent genocide and human rights abuses today.
