Bioluminescent Algae

There are many species of marine life that are bioluminescent – having the ability to produce and emit light. They use this amazing ability to hunt for and attract prey, defend against predators, and communicate with other members of their species. During this Discovery Lab we will learn about many of the unique marine organisms that have this ability and conduct exciting experiments that explore the fascinating world of bioluminescence in the ocean.

Discovery Labs are provided each month by the Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve in Virginia (CBNERR-VA). These labs provide fun, family-friendly opportunities to learn about the marine environment. Each lab includes a short presentation followed by activity demonstrations and trivia games. Resources are also provided for kids and adults to further their exploration of the topic at home. Registration is required to receive access to this online event.
