Abstract:
The mission of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is to protect human health and the environment. The presentation will provide an overview of the environmental challenges faced by EPA scientists in protecting the aquatic environment, and some of the legal tools and scientific approaches used to address them, as best as possible. The talk will focus on the process for developing water quality criteria, and their application in water quality standards and aquatic discharge permits for regulating point source pollution. The presentation will touch upon the realities of the boundaries of science and science policy, and other factors, in environmental decision-making, and what it is like to devote a career to science in the public service.
