Steven Nelson, Professor of African and African American Art, UCLA & Andrew W. Mellon Professor at the Center for Advanced Study of the Visual Arts, National Gallery of Art will present “Mark Bradford: Counterfeit Abstraction”.

Since the 1990s, Mark Bradford’s large-scale paintings have incorporated modernist abstraction and urban grids to explore black history, the specter of race and racism, and the power of place in human experience. With such things in mind, this lecture analyzes how the artist, as a geographer, creates monumental, chaotic spaces that problematize the authority of official maps while they remap new kinds of spaces that interrogate the relationships of groups of things, peoples, and ideologies in new and, at times, uncomfortable ways.
