Title: Artificial Intelligence Tools to Promote Social Good in the Workplace
Abstract: In this talk, I guide the audience to learn about the design and evaluation processes of Human-Centered AI tools in digital labor platforms. To exemplify this process, I comprehensively explain two socio-technical systems and conclude with thought-provoking design studios of AI-powered tools. The first system is "Invisible Labor Tracker'', a web browser plugin that audits and brings light to an important power dynamic: forcing others to do invisible labor (i.e., do unpaid tasks). Through my tool, I uncovered that workers invest on average a third of their time in invisible labor, which especially involves being vigilant to check their payments and being on call for "good employers''. The second system, "Reputation Agent'', is an intelligent tool that helps workers address power dynamics around being unjustly evaluated. The system detects when employers write unfair evaluations about workers. In such cases, the tool prompts employers to reflect and focus on the performance metrics that are actually within workers’ control. I conclude by explaining how this methodology generalizes to other work environments and reflecting on how we can promote social good with Artificial Intelligence. My systems point to a future where A.I. can be used to empower people to achieve more.
