[PAST EVENT] Community Discussion: "Women, War and Peace"
October 17, 2011
6:30pm - 8pm
Hosted by WHRO, Hampton Roads' public media affiliate, in partnership with the William & Mary Law School, the Old Dominion University Women's Studies Department, and Commonwealth Catholic Charities Refugee and Immigrant Services, the community discussion at William & Mary will explore the changing roles of women in war and peace. The event will feature welcoming remarks by Stephen E. Hanson, William & Mary Vice Provost for International Affairs and director of the Reves Center for International Studies. Following a preview of the new five-part PBS series, Women, War & Peace, WHRO's Barbara Hamm Lee, executive producer and host of Another View, will moderate a panel discussion and audience participation.
The panelists include Dr. Jennifer Fish, chair of the Women's Studies Department at ODU, Karen Kurilko, regional director of the Hampton Roads Office of Commonwealth Catholic Charities Refugee and Immigrant Services, and Christie Warren, director of the William & Mary Law School Program in Comparative Legal Studies and Post-Conflict Peacebuilding. Join the discussion to learn how our community is responding to these issues both locally and abroad. The event is free and all are welcome.
Women, War & Peace, which premiered on WHRO TV 15 on October 11, looks beyond familiar images of uniformed male soldiers and ammunition and tells the stories of women who are emerging as witnesses, courageous survivors, peace activists, political negotiators, community organizers and heads of state. In five episodes, viewers will go to Bosnia, Liberia, Afghanistan and Colombia to experience for the first time on television the unprecedented stories of women in conflict hotspots all over the world. The journey of Leymah Gbowee, one of the co-recipients of the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize, is captured in Episode 3, Pray the Devil Back to Hell.
A second community discussion will be hosted at Old Dominion University on Oct. 24, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., in the Batten Arts & Letters Building.
